Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program:

Letter from the Psychiatrist-in-Chief and the Director of Residency Training

You are about to make one of the most important decisions of your professional life. The psychiatric residency program you choose will profoundly affect your development as a physician and as a person, and it will influence the course of your career for years to come.

As you prepare to make this significant decision, we encourage you to explore the psychiatric residency program here at The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital.

The 180-year-old Institute of Living is one of the country’s leading mental health centers. It was the first hospital of any kind to be established in Connecticut and the third mental health facility to be opened in the United States. The Institute is a psychiatric landmark, a place where Moral Treatment was refined and enhanced and where leading-edge psychiatric research is conducted today. It is part of a nationally recognized medical complex anchored by Hartford Hospital, the largest hospital in Connecticut.

The Institute has a proud tradition of psychiatric education that dates back to the mid-20th century. Our faculty and graduates are accomplished and respected figures in the profession.

After a decade of participation in a joint program with a neighboring institution, The Institute of Living’s psychiatric residency program has been reestablished as an independent residency and will welcome its third class of trainees this summer.

As a psychiatric resident at The Institute of Living you will:

  • Gain knowledge and experience in providing a full spectrum of services to our patients, who represent all ages and backgrounds and who are seeking treatment for a broad array of disorders
  • Learn from nationally prominent professionals—experienced psychiatric educators who are invested in a rigorous course of training and passionate about helping residents acquire the knowledge and experience essential to excellence in the field
  • Acquire a firm foundation in the array of mental health therapies through a curriculum that recognizes the dynamic connection between psychotherapy and neuropsychiatry
  • Be part of an institution that is home to the new Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center—a generously endowed, state-of-the-art facility conducting clinical research in schizophrenia and related severe psychiatric disorders
  • Learn in a community committed to incorporating into diagnosis and treatment the familial, social, spiritual and cultural factors that are an integral part of each person’s mental and emotional experience

We hope you’ll take the time to learn more about The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital Psychiatric Residency Program. You’ll find it to be unique in its merits, its philosophy, and its ability to prepare you to make a significant contribution to the profession as you pursue a rewarding and meaningful career.

Harold I. Schwartz, M.D.
