Child & Adolescent
Psychiatry Residency: Residents' Letter
Summer/Fall 2007
Dear Prospective Candidates,
We would like to
welcome you to the website of The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program. We thank you for your
interest and are delighted that you are applying to The Institute of Living (IOL).
The 185 year-old IOL is one of the country’s
leading mental health centers. It was the first hospital of any kind to be
established in Connecticut and the third mental health facility to be opened in
the United States. The Institute is a psychiatric landmark, a place where moral
treatment was refined and enhanced and where leading-edge psychiatric research
is conducted today. The Institute’s campus is part of a larger medical complex
that also includes Hartford Hospital (the largest hospital in Connecticut) and
the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC).
Our program
offers residents the opportunity to receive superb training from distinguished
faculty in a stimulating academic environment.
Our department is devoted to providing an excellent psychiatric education for
residents. Carefully designed clinical rotations and extensive didactics combine
to provide a broad and thorough education.
Residents are encouraged to
develop their own special interests by tailoring certain rotations and elective
experiences as they advance in the residency. They are assisted in this by a
diverse, productive, and extremely educationally-oriented faculty who welcome
their teaching responsibilities and personal interactions with residents.
Faculty and residents work together to create a friendly atmosphere, which
encourages residents to reach their full potential as psychiatric physicians.
The quality and number of the
applicants to our program continue to grow. There are a number of reasons that
account for this growth.
Why do residents choose the IOL over other programs?
- Size of residency
program
- Education as the
priority
- Strong psychotherapy
training
- Close proximity of
training sites
- Team approach of
residency
- Enhanced emphasis on
faculty mentorship of trainees and evidence-based learning
-
Moonlighting opportunities
- Front-loaded call system
- Direct clinical
supervision
- Graduated patient care
responsibility
Selecting a residency program is a difficult and
time-consuming process. We welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you
may have and look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Salma Rahim, M.D., Chief Resident and the 2007-2008 Residents/Fellows
