Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency
Training Program
Letter from the Director of Training and the Division Chief
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for considering a career in
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and for taking a look at our training
program! The field is a very challenging and rewarding one as it seeks to
help meet the mental health needs of the nation’s children, adolescents and
their families in a complex socioeconomic, cultural and political climate.
In addition, the field is poised to integrate incredible findings in basic
and clinical neuroscience into evidence-based treatment of youth and their
families. Lastly, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a specialty with a
shortage of practitioners so jobs are available in a variety of settings and
can be tailored to individual lifestyles.
Our training program aims to graduate
residents who are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st
century while maintaining the essence and uniqueness of the Child and
Adolescent Psychiatrist (CAP). We emphasize (1) the importance of the
therapeutic relationship, (2) a solid knowledge base in normal
development, (3) understanding the degree to which developmental
processes are embedded in psychodynamics, (4) the biopsychosocial model
and (5) carefully honed clinical diagnostic and psychotherapeutic skills
in various modalities. We do this in an atmosphere of collegiality and
multidisciplinary teamwork. Therefore, our graduates are not only ready
to meet the challenges of practicing Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in
the present and future, but they also have developed an identity and the
skills necessary to supervise and lead others.
Faculty members of the training program
are selected not only for their desire to provide the highest quality
care to patients but for their interest and investment in teaching.
There are seven board-certified CAP at the Institute of Living (IOL)
along with four board-eligible CAP. Pediatric psychologists, family
therapists, social workers and APRNs make unique and expert
contributions to the training program as well. Complementing the IOL
faculty are several dedicated community practitioners. Overall, this
group of dedicated teachers includes two former training directors,
three triple-board graduates and two special individuals who bring close
to 80 years of experience in the field to their work with our trainees.
In 2005, the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at
the Institute of Living (IOL) celebrated 50 years of providing services to
children, adolescents and their families, its history paralleling in many ways
the growth of the field in general. The training of mental health professionals
has long been an integral part of that history with the first Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry trainee being enrolled in 1961. The Division, which is
part of the Department of Psychiatry at Hartford Hospital, continues to expand
its clinical services and the residency training program continues to thrive
under the sponsorship of Hartford Hospital.
Building on its history of providing
excellent clinical care through a range of services and its educational
mission, the IOL is expanding its research efforts in the field of Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry. The establishment of the Olin
Neuropsychiatric Research Center with its state of the art imaging
technologies and the appointment of a Director of Child and Adolescent
Research have stimulated this growth. Many residents are now involved
in clinical research both as part of their regular clinical work and
during their elective time.
Many factors will go into your selection of a training program.
The information you glean from this website and any printed materials you have
received serve as a first look at out training program. We look forward to
meeting those of you who find that the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program fits with your ideas
about psychiatric education.
Sincerely,
Robert Sahl, M.D.
Division Chief, Acting Director of Training
