Abstract:
Vast amounts of information about the
workings of the brain and psychiatric disorders have been compiled over the past
two decades. This information is opening up new approaches to assessment,
treatment, and ongoing clinical management of patients with psychiatric
disorders. This presentation presents an overview of the emergent
neurobiological principles that should influence cutting edge prescriptive
practices for patients experiencing common psychiatric disorders. Content will
address new understanding of such things as soft neurological signs, cortical
plasticity, hierarchical structuring, and brain neurotrophic factors. The links
between this content and the selection of medications for optimal treatment will
be discussed, along with the rational for the development of many new
psychiatric treatments, and the implications of this knowledge to the APN role.
Participants will leave this presentation with a clear idea of how to apply and
utilize neurobiological principles in every day care practice settings.
Learning Objectives:
-
The participants will be able to identify
the critical principles of advance neurobiology needed for prescriptive
clinical practice.
-
The participants will be able to
analyze the role of neurotransmitters and brain
structures in the behavioral expression of mental illness.
-
The participants will be able to
discuss the implications for prescriptive
practice of new brain findings.
