Schizophrenia Treatment Services: Consultation Service
for Families
The Schizophrenia Treatment Services at The Institute of Living
harness the expertise of modern research centers and the experience of a
full-spectrum psychiatric facility with more than a 175-year tradition of
compassionate caring for patients with psychosis and their families.
Choosing the optimal
treatment for psychosis can be complicated and difficult. Our consultation
staff can provide patients and family members with:
- information and assistance for individuals in the early stages of
the illness
- a second opinion on diagnosis and treatment options
- advice on developing action plans to deal with the long-term
effects of psychosis
- ways to improve quality of life
The
type of consultation
is tailored to the individual needs of the client and
affords families access to a large group of highly
experienced mental health professionals in many
specialty areas.
The steps in the consultation provide families with an opportunity for comprehensive discussion and planning. Families using this
service frequently ask:
- What medications should be used?
- What is the “real” diagnosis?
- How can I help improve school or job performance?
- What treatments other than medication are helpful?
- How serious is the problem?
- How do I know when he or she is getting better?
- How can concentration and memory be improved?
- Can my loved one live on his own and if not, what are the
alternatives?
- How can we help with the recovery process, but still resume
family functioning for other family members?
