Inpatient Care
Though inpatient admissions occur less frequently in today's psychiatric system of care
than in the past, brief hospitalization may be appropriate for a patient who needs to be
medically stabilized, or evaluated prior to treatment in a less intensive setting. The
average length of stay in our inpatient units has decreased substantially, although
long-term hospitalization remains available.
Inpatient services at The Institute are available for children, adolescents, adults and
older adults, as well as for specific patient populations. Treatment plans for inpatients
are highly individualized, as is the case in other parts of the system. Institute
specialists are experienced in treating all psychiatric diagnoses, including
schizophrenia, eating disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, and intractable illnesses found to resist treatment elsewhere. Our clinicians
are also skilled in treating chemical dependency disorders.
Inpatient care at The Institute of Living serves as more than a starting point in our
system of care. If necessary, patients in day treatment and other ambulatory programs may
enter The Institute's hospital at any time. The patient will be stabilized as quickly as
possible and then returned to the less intensive setting. When medical complications
occur, The Institute maintains a staff of physicians trained in internal medicine and
other subspecialties. As part of the Hartford Hospital system, The Institute also has
access to the full range of sophisticated medical expertise and technology.
