Residential Services
| The Institute of Living offers a
comprehensive network of residential programs for patients who do not
require hospitalization, but still need support and structure as they move
back into the community. |
Residences in the nearby community and on our campus provide structured programs in
homelike settings that promote the development of social and life skills. A team of staff
members supervises each residence, coordinating treatment programs and assisting both
residents and therapists.
Residential programs can assist in the transition from hospitalization to independent
living, or, in many cases, function as an alternative to inpatient care. They serve a
broad spectrum of patients whose ages and severity of illness differ widely. Often,
patients are referred into our residential programs by community therapists who continue
to work with the patient. Utilization of The Institute's residential services varies from
person to person, but in each case residential programs represent a cost-efficient and
clinically effective alternative to hospitalization that can lead to new possibilities for
treatment and recovery.

THE BUCKINGHAM HOUSE
Located on the grounds of
The Institute of Living, the Buckingham House is a
13 bed group home for clients who need short term help coping with an exacerbation of
their illness or who need long term support and assistance. Staff provide social and life
skills training, supportive counseling, and case management, and work closely with
clinicians in the partial hospital programs and with hospital and community therapists.
All clients are encouraged to make use of community resources and leisure
opportunities. The program has its own van and routinely takes clients out for social and
recreational activities, shopping, and errands. Located a little over one mile from
downtown Hartford, the Buckingham House, and other residences, offer easy bus access into
the community.
Clients needs and strengths determine the level of support and supervision that
they have available to them and the amount of autonomy that they are granted. Some clients
leave grounds only with staff, or by themselves for local errands only. Others may use the
bus system, or even their own vehicles, to attend school, work or leisure activities.
Staff are on-site 24 hours per day. Medications are held in the office; clients
self-administer medications under staff supervision.

Located across the street from The Institute of Living, The Barnard House is a
12 bed supervised apartment facility catering primarily to men in their late
teens and early 20s. Many referrals, via the Department of Children and Families
(DCF), live at Barnard as a transition from more structured living situations to
independent living. Some clients, who would benefit more from a supervised apartment model
rather than the group home model of the Buckingham House are also referred from
The
Institute of Living or from the community.
The Barnard House is comprised of 4 apartments, each with two bedrooms. Staff
are on-site 24 hours per day and assist clients with learning independent living
skills and handling greater independence and responsibility.
