Two events last week — a day-long symposium and a 5K road race — raised awareness and money for the Purple Light Project, which supports patients in need, addresses stigma and educates the public in support of people with mental illness and their families.

The symposium highlighted a community of healers and addressed the negative effects of discrimination and how to provide humanistic care for those struggling with mental health issues.

The race at the Institute of Living, brought out runners of all ages. The top three finishers were from the South Windsor High School cross country team, with sophomore Gavin Lippi taking the top prize, finishing in just over 17 minutes. The event drew many runners from the popular HHC Runners Facebook group as well as family members, friends, children and pets.
